From Yakima to Your Brewery: A Look at Shelley Desmarais and CLS Farms
Connecting Hops Company clients with the people and farms behind their hops.
At Hops Company, we believe that knowing where your hops come from—and who is behind them—adds real value to the brewing process. That’s why we work closely with CLS Farms, a key partner in our sourcing network, located in the Yakima Valley, Washington.
Earlier this month at the Craft Brewers Conference in Indianapolis, I had the opportunity to connect in person with Shelley Desmarais, co-owner of CLS Farms and Wenas Hop Company. With decades of experience in hop production and deep involvement in the local agricultural community, Shelley plays a central role in the supply of high-quality hops used by some of the most respected breweries worldwide.
During our conversation, I asked Shelley what she hopes to see in the future of the beer industry:
“I hope beer continues to evolve as a tool for connection, creativity, and cultural storytelling.
I want to see more diversity—not just in who’s drinking beer, but in who’s making it, leading breweries, and shaping the conversation.”
She also emphasized the growing importance of sustainability and long-term impact:
“I'm excited for a future where sustainability and community impact are as important as hops and yeast—where beer is brewed with intention, and where every pint tells a story rooted in place, people, and purpose.”
Shelley is not only involved in agricultural production—she also leads Rooted Yakima Valley, an initiative aimed at strengthening ties between farmers and their local community through outreach, education, and visibility for regional growers.
When asked about her sources of inspiration in the brewing world, she highlighted professionals who are helping shape a more inclusive and values-driven industry:
“Kelly McKnight of New Belgium Brewing, Sarah Perez of Fast Friends Brewing, and many brewers who are reclaiming ingredients, techniques, and traditions. Their impact is deep and lasting.”
Shelley’s work reflects a broader shift in the industry: a move toward more transparency, sustainability, and respect for origin. For brewers who care not just about the final product, but also about the integrity of the supply chain, having a direct line to growers like Shelley is key.
At Hops Company, we’re proud to help make that connection.
Because great hops start in the field—and working with farms like CLS ensures that our clients receive consistent, high-quality product, season after season.
